A New Era of Patient Care in the Middle East
Al Mafraq Hospital

Implementing the vision of Abu Dhabi Health Services Co. PJSC (SEHA), the new Al Mafraq Hospital introduces the community of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates to a state-of-the-art healthcare facility and a new era in the field of medicine.
SEHA, a government agency committed to providing Abu Dhabi with the finest in healthcare facilities, has joined with Al Mafraq Hospital, an institution serving the community since 1983, to provide, with the new facility, the highest level of patient care.
The 745-bed hospital and associated outpatient clinic are the result of a collaborative design effort between the design team, the client, and the operator. The new hospital complex is distinguished by four prominent patient towers and striking contemporary architecture indicative of the state-of-the art medical facilities housed inside. Al Mafraq will offer an enhanced and comprehensive patient care program in its delivery of excellent urgent care and general medical services.

When visiting the new Al Mafraq Hospital, patients, friends, and families will be greeted by a welcoming entry sequence. The arrival is gracious and open with attractive landscaped driveways and enhanced road paving and sidewalks. The entry lobbies and access to the buildings are spacious and public friendly. The reception lobby interiors in both the main hospital and outpatient clinic building provide an inviting, non-clinical environment and promote ease and well being for all who visit. Elegant sculptures guide visitors to main hospital elevator lobbies as striking wayfinding to the patient towers. Convenient access to the outpatient building is offered from the main hospital lobby through a wide and comfortable pedestrian bridge.

The outpatient entrance is graced with generous landscaping and sustainable natural environments. Visitors are greeted by an inviting and refreshing water feature. The high ceiling in the main lobby and spacious reception area welcome the outpatient to the 145 clinics and supporting services.
Carefully planned and located for privacy and comfort, the Women’s and Children’s Pavilion has a separate entrance and a patient tower dedicated for specialist services for mothers and children.

Each patient tower contains no more than 30 single rooms per floor and each floor has comfortable and state-of-the-art nursing stations and patient control centers. Spacious corridors lead to rooms designed for comfort and privacy for the patient and visitors. All rooms have large windows and ample natural light. Special VIP floors are provided for patients requiring special privacy and attention. Dignified and comfortable suites and surroundings are extended to the patient guest and their families.

In addition to rooftop gardens and the latest energy conservation devices, the entire facility provides enhanced patient environments and long-term efficiency. The entire medical center complex is designed for sustainability and maximum energy savings. The building design was developed in accordance with best international practices for sustainable design. Examples of sustainable design features include natural day lighting; a VAV system to reduce volume of air supply and fan energy; locally sourced or produced materials where possible; wadis or water catchments with low maintenance landscape and use of indigenous plants; low flow water fixtures and appliances; condensate recovery used for non-potable purposes (cooling towers) to reduce fresh water consumption; 75% of the total power requirement for heating hot water is generated by roof mounted solar panels; and a construction waste program. The new Al Mafraq Hospital received the prestigious 2010 Best Sustainable Hospital Award from Hospital Build International.

The culturally sensitive design responds to the cultural norms of the United Arab Emirates. One of the four towers is dedicated to treatment for women and children only. In the areas where both men and women receive treatment (such as the imaging department), discreet pathways to and from the treatment areas allow for gender separation. Waiting areas are designed to accommodate large numbers of guests, as extended families often gather to visit patients.

Al Mafraq Hospital will set the benchmark of how healthcare will be delivered in Abu Dhabi. In addition to providing the highest level of care and economies of operation and a new experience to medical staff and patients, Al Mafraq will become the standard for modern healing environments.
