West Philadelphia Campus Master Plan
Drexel University
Philadelphia, PA
40 acres
As enrollment rises, Philadelphia's Drexel University must expand and modernize while maintaining its historic significance. Burt Hill designed a master plan that would satisfy its collegiate requirements, permit the school to play an active role in the neighborhood, and give it room for future growth.
The master plan and facilities audit identified site enhancement and development opportunities. Highlights include the "Drexel Walk" connecting the academic, residential, and recreational areas, a pedestrian mall which closes two blocks to vehicles and promotes green space, transparent buildings that allow plenty of light, and a biofilter wall, the first of its kind in the U.S.
Sustainable and innovative designs are at the center of this project. Drexel University's openness and desire to evolve is the future of college education.
