WHYY Technology Center

WHYY, Inc.

Philadelphia, PA

70,000 square feet

A public television and radio station based in Philadelphia, WHYY planned to expand its mission to become a community telecommunications center providing a variety of educational and informational services through various media forms.  Following a detailed space analysis, it was determined WHYY’s existing space was inefficient for current and projected needs.  As a result, a portion of the building was demolished and replaced with an addition, while the remainder of the building was completely renovated.  The refurbished exterior features an angled glass façade that allows visitors to observe producers and broadcasters at work, and an 80-foot electronic tickertape.  In addition to studios and production areas, a multi-purpose learning center was also included in the design.

This is the first broadcast facility in the region designed specifically for digital television and other new multimedia, digital technology.
