The Van Andel Institute

The Van Andel Institute

Grand Rapids, MI

157,000 square feet

The Van Andel Institute was conceived as an internationally recognized facility for medical science education and ambitious research.  The facility combines cutting edge technology with the built-in flexibility to accommodate future advances in the rapidly changing research fields.  Burt Hill engineers provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and communications systems design as members of the Rafael Viñoly design team.

Innovative engineering features allow for a fully open laboratory environment, with floor-fed electrical power, plumbing, and laboratory gas.  Ultra high-performance glass maximizes the window area, while providing optimum energy efficiency and comfort.  Increased efficiency and minimized visual intrusion were achieved through air handling solutions, such as maximized exhaust fan velocity, four separate cooling tower cells, and custom ductwork and air handling units.
