In 1985, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) commissioned Burt Hill to develop a master plan that would expand the main campus to support its strategic goals. Our role has continued for the past 20+ years as we have not only implemented elements of the master plan, but assisted in the evolutionary changes to the master plan in support of the strategic direction of the institution. Central to the master plan were renovations and new construction on the Oakland campus, a major academic medical center that provides a full spectrum of healthcare services, education, and research programs. We designed four new buildings and, through hundreds of projects, renovated space totaling more than 2.4 million square feet. Having been charged with planning for the future and implementing the present, our planning and design services have encompassed global infrastructure upgrades, power failure planning, and wind tunnel studies, as well as the architecture and engineering design services required to support UPMC's clinical, research, and educational programs.
