University of Dayton Campus Master Plan

University of Dayton

Dayton, OH

259 acres

The University of Dayton acquired 49 acres of brownfield located immediately adjacent to its campus.  This acquisition presented the university with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to expand its core campus, integrate into a diverse urban fabric, and capitalize on the potential for public / private partnerships.  To seize these opportunities, the university commissioned Burt Hill to conduct an open, engaging, and transparent master planning process that reflected the values of its Marianist heritage and community-focused culture.

Marianist education seeks to develop a sense of community:  people living, working, and praying together to focus their energy and attention beyond the boundaries of their immediate surroundings.  It was in this spirit that the planning team developed a comprehensive approach to drawing stakeholders into the planning process and, in a sense, inviting them onto UD's front porch.  The resultant process engaged a diverse group of university and community stakeholders at many levels, the most intimate of which were 70 one-on-one interviews.

The master plan provides an environment where learning and living are integrated and includes a land use plan for the entire campus, with strategy and design concepts for landscape, athletic facilities, dining services, parking, and pedestrian and vehicle paths, as well as neighborhood connections.
