Tidewater Community College Science Building
Tidewater Community College
Virginia Beach, VA
70,500 square feet
The college's new science facility responds to the increasing demand for sciences education, and accommodates natural science classrooms (chemistry, biology, geophysical sciences, physics, astronomy, and meteorology), laboratory and preparatory rooms, faculty offices, administrative offices, restrooms, storage, and mechanical areas. The building's V-shaped plan has been broken into three distinct functional groupings, which are reflected in the massing of the building. The hinge of the "V" has been reserved for the public entry and expressive round drum of the planetarium dome theater. Divisional and shared spaces occupy the three-story main body of the building while the wings house teaching laboratories and offices. The wings open to define a courtyard ringed by faculty and divisional offices. The courtyard has been dubbed a "living lab," where practical exhibits of biological and geological specimens are installed.
