Sewickley Academy

Sewickley, PA

1.7 million square feet

A three-year phased project at Sewickley Academy included a master plan, extensive site and landscape design, and new buildings for a preschool, middle school, library, and arts and administration.  In addition, major additions and renovations were planned for the existing senior school and alumni gym, and an extensive renovation program was planned for the original Sewickley Academy building.

The initial design task was to unify the image of the campus and to provide more gracious outdoor spaces for pedestrians.  The solution was to superimpose a strong diagonal axis across the campus and create a campus green aligned with the axis and defined by the surrounding buildings.  A unified effect was achieved through clearly defined pedestrian circulation areas as well as a common architectural vocabulary of porticos, red brick, white window sash, and colonnades.  Parking was pushed to the edge of the campus wherever possible.  New buildings were sited to produce a continuous arc of buildings around the green.
