Riverfront Park

City of North Charleston

North Charleston, SC

11 acres

Riverfront Park and preserve was created on the existing Officer's golf course on the former Charleston Naval Base, one of the nation's oldest military facilities.  The 11-acre park not only had to reconnect the community to the river, but also connect the community to the future and physically demonstrate the vision contained in the Noisette Master Plan, a sustainable development of 3,000 acres that are the historic center of North Charleston, South Carolina.

The design, and ultimately the elements of the park, supports principles of sustainable development.  It is ecologically healthy, using recycled materials, pervious pavement systems, zero light pollution, native plant materials, and a paspalam lawn; culturally creative in the forms of the pavilions, paths, benches, and arc walls used for temporary art; and contains evolutionary design including an earth berm restroom, light emitting tiles, and an irrigation system that minimally adds potable water to river water to achieve acceptable salinity levels.  The park also creates recreational diversity and educational opportunities.
