Physical Sciences Building

Cornell University

Ithaca, NY

200,000 square feet

To expand and enrich Cornell University's campus research sector, Burt Hill, in association with Koetter Kim & Associates, designed a new state-of-the-art science facility.  The Physical Sciences Building provides research, teaching, and support space for the physical sciences, including research facilities for atomic and solid state physics, elementary particle physics, advanced materials, nanophysics, optical physics, and biophysics.  As the sciences become more intertwined, the sharing of facilities and provision of space become critical components in research environments.  The building’s design draws from this concept, facilitating overlap and interaction between the sciences while still maintaining each department's individual identity.  The goal of the project is to link the research community and the campus, thereby attracting and retaining talent, and fostering a bond between campus and community.
