Like many other Pennsylvania cities, Erie is undergoing a rededication to its downtown core, and the Perry Square renovation project is part of a larger rejuvenation of the city. A comprehensive master plan was developed to set a vision for the park, as well as a phased approach to the construction of various elements of the commons. The design included thought toward safety, functionality, maintenance, and aesthetics. Special attention was paid to elements that would make Perry Square a safer and more exciting place to be, creating a destination within the city's downtown. By refurbishing the existing fountain and locating a new multi-functional performance space, the park not only offers new activity space for everyday, seasonal, and regional Erie events, but also retains the historic quality of the original design.
