Ocean Science and Exploration Center
University of Rhode Island
Narragansett, RI
40,000 square feet
The Ocean Science and Exploration Center, which is home to the Pell Marine Science Library and the Inner Space Center, serves as the intellectual center of the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO). The new, multi-function building facilitates increased interaction among members of the campus community and provides state-of-the-art resources necessary to carry out the research and educational mission of GSO. The building integrates library, administration, research, and social activity into a center that provides a new campus focal point.
The design of the LEED Silver certified facility incorporates various sustainable features including lighting controls to reduce energy use, low flow plumbing fixtures, a stormwater infiltration system, alternative transportation, and is landscaped with drought tolerant plantings including no-mow grass species. Construction waste is being recycled. The project uses certified wood and materials with recycled content and that are low emitting. Views are provided wherever possible out to the surrounding campus and Narragansett Bay.
