John Tyler Community College Science Building

John Tyler Community College

Midlothian, VA

70,000 square feet

To better serve the growing community and its students, John Tyler Community College is undergoing a renovation and expansion program on its Midlothian campus. A new 61,000-square-foot building houses additional academic classrooms, laboratories, faculty offices, a learning resource center, a student center, and a campus bookstore. Renovations to the existing building include the re-purposing of existing library space, the bookstore, and student lounge.

The new building serves as a catalyst for a holistic sustainable approach for the future of the campus. It features a vegetated roof that filters and absorbs rainwater, reduces heat island effect, and helps insulate the building. To reduce water consumption, the landscape design includes native and adaptive species, and the bathrooms have been outfitted with low-flow plumbing fixtures. Bike racks, showers, and special parking for fuel-efficient vehicles promote alternative transportation.  The project is LEED® Silver certified.
