Janelia Farm Research Campus

Howard Hughes Medical Institute

Ashburn, VA

750,000 square feet

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute was seeking to build a biomedical research campus in North Virginia.  Burt Hill provided MEP engineering services as part of the Rafael Viñoly Architects design team.  The campus provides a center for creating and disseminating the research tools needed for biomedicine, with a special emphasis on collaborative research among biologists and scientists from other fields.

Burt Hill collaborated on various designs including research laboratories, a conference center and transient housing for over 100 visitors.  The collaborative design process focused on developing flexible module laboratory grids that addressed unique and specific requirements for the cutting edge research that would be performed.  Components of the building include a 20,000-square-foot vivarium, a 1,500-square-foot BSL3 laboratory, a conference center, and transient housing for over 100 visitors.

The Janelia Farm Research Campus was awarded R&D Magazine's 2007 Lab of the Year Award.
