Iowa Memorial Union

University of Iowa

Iowa City, IA

338,000 square feet

As the center of campus life for the past 80 years, the Iowa Memorial Union has a long history of continuously improving its facilities to better serve the hundreds of students, staff, and community members who use the center on a daily basis.  The university was eager to renovate and expand the 338,000-square-foot center in order to provide additional dining and studying space, improve food service, update the bookstore, and construct a river terrace.

Burt Hill worked with OPN Architects to include modern design elements that enhance the center for students and faculty.  The design features new entrances that connect to the campus and river, improved circulation, new food service, a new restaurant, a remodeled bookstore, new office space, a new study area, a new student lounge, a new student activities suite, an outdoor river terrace, and general HVAC upgrades.  The building remained open during construction.

The new student center is a gathering space that will accommodate the school both now and in the future.
