In response to growth and as part of a larger master plan, UNCW expanded and enhanced the University Union, the heart of its vibrant campus community. Burt Hill provided campus master planning and design services, in association with Moser Mayer Phoenix, for a new addition that takes advantage of existing campus features and allows pedestrian traffic to enter in multiple directions via an "interior street." Along this street are areas for dining and student organization meetings, as well as a bookstore and a movie theater. The design complements the campus' Georgian style, with such architectural features as a projecting gable roof, which helps reduce the scale of the building with respect to its context. Renovations to the existing buildings fit with the campus' traditional feel, but allow for a more modern expression, characterized by large expanses of glass for transparency.
