The high cost of building new or replacement hospitals has caused healthcare providers to rethink how they deliver medical services. Ambulatory surgery centers that add patient beds to become a specialty hospital expand their capabilities and opportunities for business, delivering high-quality specialized medical services while proving both profitable for the owners and cost-effective for patients and their insurance companies. This model was used as the foundation for Edgewood Surgical Hospital, a free-standing specialty hospital for outpatient surgery.
Facilities include four operating rooms; two endoscopy rooms; an imaging suite with an open MRI and x-ray equipment; patient holding and recovery areas; a lounge; and a ten-bed nursing unit to accommodate overnight stays. The spacious lobby has a hotel-like atmosphere and features a nourishment area for family. The center also houses its own supply and sterilization facilities, as well as upscale locker rooms for the physicians and staff.
