DeNaples Campus Center

University of Scranton

Scranton, PA

120,000 square feet

To accommodate increased enrollment and help build a stronger sense of campus community, the University of Scranton commissioned Burt Hill to design its new student center.  The largest building project in the university’s history, the new facility provides ample gathering and dining spaces, fostering interaction among students, faculty, and the community.

Sited on a newly created, landscaped campus quadrangle, the DeNaples Campus Center features food services, a ballroom, a bookstore, and student organization offices.  Windowed atriums and two-story open spaces create a spacious, comfortable environment.  The center serves as a “gateway” to the campus and a bridge between the university and the surrounding city.

The center achieved a LEED Silver rating and is a testament to the university's sustainability initiatives.  Environmentally-friendly features include motion light sensors in offices and meeting rooms; raw materials that came from vendors within a 500-mile radius; recycled construction debris; water faucets and soap dispensers activated by energy-saving infrared sensors; and paint, carpets, and floorings that conform to specific standards to eliminate the emission of certain chemical odors.
