Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Troy, NY
218,000 square feet
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute set out to enhance its research programs in biotechnology and establish a leadership role among technological research universities. To reach these goals, the institute needed a state-of-the-art platform for collaborative research, focusing on the application of engineering, physical, and information sciences to the life sciences. The new facility would need to provide a technologically advanced environment to attract and retain Rensselaer faculty and researchers engaging in interdisciplinary research, as well as bolster the school's visibility in the science and technology sector.
The facility, the result of collaboration between Burt Hill as lead architecture firm and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson as lead design firm, incorporates modular wet and dry laboratories and supporting core research laboratories, in addition to office areas, conference rooms, and a 153-seat auditorium. The design reflects the Georgian roots of the campus while also providing a modern home for cutting-edge research. A linear atrium acts as the building's main circulation area, utilizing natural ventilation and providing controlled daylighting and views. The natural ventilation saves the school $1 million annually.
Ranked among the world's most advanced research facilities, the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies provides the university with a state-of-the-art location to conduct interdisciplinary research, host world-class programs and symposia, and provide the physical environment that aids in recruitment of promising researchers. The center truly opens new pathways to innovation, discovery, and ultimately, to healing.
The Center was designed to achieve Silver LEED certification.
