Biomedical Science Tower
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
Pittsburgh, PA
440,000 square feet
The Biomedical Science Tower (BST) reflects the promise of modern medical research to fulfill the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s (UPMC) fundamental mission: research, patient care, and education. An air-rights structure erected over an existing parking garage in Pittsburgh's congested Oakland area, the BST is home to UPMC's research component. Each of the tower's ten floors are approximately one acre, and contain flexible modular labs ranging from 200 to 2,400 square feet in size, with associated service areas, offices, and a seminar room. The building contains a Class 1,000 clean lab and a 22,000-square-foot animal facility. Like many buildings in Oakland, the BST is clad in limestone and glass, and includes punched openings and a curtain wall. The BST was recognized as a Lab of the Year by R&D Magazine.
