- Evidence-Based System of Design Addressed in New Book, September 1, 2010
Member of Burt Hill's staff have written the book “10M: Toward an Integrated Approach to Design.” Anton Germishuizen, AIA, Senior Vice President and member of the Board of Directors and J. Rossi, Chief Marketing Officer of Burt Hill, led a team responsible for developing and applying 10 critical, interconnected drivers, or metrics, that turn the often subjective architectural and engineering process into an analytical, measurable one, without making design prescriptive. In two essays in the book, Germishuizen and Rossi connect design and marketing and give examples of how the metrics contribute to the interconnection of design and engineering resulting in the best outcome.
In relation to the book, Peter Moriarty, AIA, President and CEO, states: “In virtually every aspect of the organization – from fiscal operation and operational management to design processes, technology, and marketing – we have adapted and adopted practices to reflect a world in which the consequences of what and how we design have never been greater. Erik Hokanson, AIA, a Senior Architect and Lead Healthcare Designer for the MENA Region, is presenting at the upcoming Sustainable Healthcare and Hospital Development Conference. The session, “Healthcare Design in Harsh Climates: Al Mafraq Hospital, A Case Study,” will address sustainability in design and construction of a new healthcare facility. - URI Project Receives Brick in Architecture Award, August 9, 2010
The Ocean Science and Exploration Center at the University of Rhode Island was recently recognized by the Brick Industry Association as a Bronze Award winner in the 2010 Brick in Architecture Awards program. The building, a winner in the educational category, was selected from among more than 160 entries in this year’s competition. Submissions were evaluated based on creative and technical use of clay brick in meeting structure, aesthetic, and architectural design challenges.
"The quality and depth of submissions made judging intense and difficult. With winners coming from more than 20 states, the Brick In Architecture Awards Competition is truly national in scope," exclaimed J. Gregg Borchelt, President & CEO of BIA. "The winning projects prove that brick is versatile, adaptable, and beautiful in just about any architectural style."
The Ocean Science and Exploration Center serves as the intellectual center of the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO). The new, multi-function building facilitates increased interaction among members of the campus community and provides state-of-the-art resources necessary to carry out the research and educational mission of GSO. The design integrates library, administration, research, and social activity into a center that provides a new campus focal point. The Inner Space Center, a key program piece of the building, was designed to serve Dr. Robert Ballard, the oceanographer and explorer who discovered the RMS Titanic. The center features state-of-the-art equipment, enabling researchers and students to monitor, track, and disseminate information from oceanographic expeditions and remotely operated vehicles in real time via satellite telecommunication. The new campus center supports learning by enhancing library and computer resources, and providing formal and informal meeting spaces for intellectual interchange. Through technology and outreach programs, the building becomes a learning center that reaches far beyond its physical location. It strengthens campus identity and the arrival sequence, as well as the relationship between the campus and the bay.

Burt Hill’s Cleveland office continues its growth with the following additions to its Beachwood office.
Loren Brockway, AIA, LEED AP, has joined Burt Hill as Project Architect and Lead BIM Modeler. He brings 13 years of experience and a diverse background in architecture, focusing most recently on educational projects. Brockway joins the design team executing the district-wide renovation / expansion of Rocky River Schools.
Katherine Land has joined Burt Hill as a Graduate Interior Designer. She graduated in May from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a Bachelors Degree in Interior Design. Land is a valuable addition to the interior design studio, and brings strong graphics capabilities to projects for Euclid City Schools, Beachwood Schools, and The University of Akron.
Russell Hess has relocated to Burt Hill’s Cleveland office after two years with its Pittsburgh office. He has a diverse background working in architecture and engineering for a wide range of projects. Hess is working as a job captain in the K-12 studio on the new Roosevelt and Glenbrook Elementary Schools for Euclid City Schools.

The 2010 Association of Community College Trustees Leadership Congress offers an opportunity for community college leaders to interact with top experts to identify and discuss the forces reshaping the economy, education, government, and social networking, and to explore the crucial impact of the increasingly global economy on local communities. The conference will take place October 19-23 in Toronto.

The Tradeline College and University Science Facilities 2010 conference will help attendees discover new solutions for modernized teaching and research at the lowest possible capital and operating cost. Scheduled for October 18-19 at The Seaport Hotel in Boston, this is the annual planning meeting for academic science and research program administrators, capital project teams, campus planners, academic program planners, facility and space planners, facility directors, project managers, faculty, deans, and science department heads to benchmark their plans and programs, and build on the latest successes and innovations.
Today, all science programs are multidisciplinary, and because of the wide variety and diversity of lab and lab support program requirements they must address, are difficult to plan. Successful facilities accommodate this variety and have high-utilization, efficient net/gross, and are less expensive to operate. During the conference session “Multidisciplinary Research and Teaching Space Plans: More Science Program, Less Cost,” Michael Reagan, AIA, and Alexander Wing, AIA, LEED AP, principals at Burt Hill, will examine programming concepts, planning standards, and metrics for multidisciplinary research and science teaching facilities that deliver three critical performance results: 1) high space utilization, 2) fit ups that are easy and economical to change, and 3) operating costs that are a fraction of previously completed science buildings.
- DCCC STEM Complex Wins IIDA Award, July 7, 2010
The Delaware County Community College Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Complex in Media, Pennsylvania, was recognized by the PA/NJ/DE Chapter of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) during its recent awards program. The 2010 6th Annual Design Awards, which took place in Center City Philadelphia, recognized seven projects for exceptional interior design. The STEM Complex received an award in the “Honorable Mention – Sustainability” category. The building, which opened in May 2010, is expected to obtain a LEED Silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Its sustainable features include:
-- Room finishes, adhesives, and paints contain low-emitting VOCs.
-- All of the facility’s wood products are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified.
-- Acoustical panel ceilings installed in 75% of the building are comprised of at least 61-78% recycled materials.
-- Carpet tiles are made with a percentage of post industrial and post consumer materials.
- Burt Hill Hires Mitchel Levitt as National Director of Business Strategy, June 23, 2010
Burt Hill, an international architecture and engineering firm, announced today that Mitchel Levitt has joined the firm as National Director of Business Strategy. In this newly established position at Burt Hill, Levitt will work closely with the healthcare practice group to help strengthen and grow that market segment. He has 30 years of experience in architecture and engineering focusing in the healthcare market.
Levitt is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and was enrolled in the MBA program at The Ohio State University.

- Burt Hill and SCW Promoting Education in Haiti , June 15, 2010
Burt Hill is providing design services in a collaborative effort with Schools for the Children of the World (SCW) to design a new school in Haiti. Located approximately 35 miles west of Port au Prince near the epicenter of the recent earthquake, The École National Saint Rose de Lima in Léogâne will house 600 students in grades K-13.
The first of 11 school reconstruction projects in the Léogâne area to be designed and built in partnership with the Spanish Red Cross, The École National Saint Rose de Lima is a free public school in the center of Léogâne. More than 1,100 girls attended the school prior to the January earthquake. Because there is no temporary school building in place for students to attend classes, SCW has made this project a top priority, with Burt Hill beginning design for the reconstruction in late May and construction slated to begin in August. Volunteers from Burt Hill’s K-12 studio will be traveling to Haiti to oversee the design process.
The educational facility will include 12 classrooms for the primary grades and five for the secondary grades, a small administration building, a guard house, living facilities for four employees, a library, two science rooms, a multipurpose room, and a kitchen.
Schools for the Children of the World is committed to improving educational opportunity in underdeveloped countries with quality school facilities. Gina Bocra, Burt Hill’s Director of Sustainable Design, is leading an education session at GreenBuildingsNY, a conference aimed at educating building and design professionals on the latest innovations around green products, services, and regulations. Gina’s presentation will focus on LEED commerical interiors. Since its launch, LEED for Interior Design & Construction has helped tenant projects to reach sustainability goals. Recent changes will affect projects registered under the latest version. The Accreditation program for professionals that administer LEED on projects has changed as well. Gina will discuss the new system now in place to govern the distribution of points in LEED ID&C, and will review the updates that have been made to reference standards and thresholds for performance. She will also discuss how LEED now rewards projects for addressing regional environmental issues, as well as the requirements for continuing education to maintain your LEED AP ID&C Specialty designation.

Design on the Delaware brings together design, planning, and building professionals and businesses, and public leaders from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region for professional education, cross-boundary exploration, social engagement, and networking. As part of the three-day (October 20-22) event in Philadelphia, Burt Hill is leading an educational program on STEM facilities design. “An Integrated Approach to Design – A Case Study in STEM Facilities Design” will illustrate how a performance driven design methodology is used to achieve successful design solutions. Members of the design team for the Delaware County Community College STEM Complex will discuss how an integrated, BIM-based design process aided in working through design challenges related to program, context, site, and sustainability. The result is an aggressive cotemporary architecture befitting the STEM vision; one that redefines the face of the college as a progressive player in the market. The successful process was facilitated by an integrated team with a strong shared vision and a commitment to a BIM-based process. The final outcome realized the passion and commitment of DCCC’s president to STEM education, which is of critical regional economic importance. It is also a growing trend in community college education and a major underpinning of our national education agenda.
- Burt Hill and SEHA Recognized for New Al Mafraq Hospital Project, June 3, 2010
Al Mafraq Hospital, designed by international design firm Burt Hill and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), was named “Best Sustainable Hospital Project” in the prestigious Hospital Build Middle East 2010 Awards program. The award recognizes outstanding commitment to sustainability in terms of design, development, and construction by honoring projects that demonstrate an efficient use of resources, such as energy and water, and use of materials that reduce environmental and health impacts of the facility.
The design for the 745-bed Al Mafraq Hospital, located in Abu Dhabi, was developed in accordance with best international practices for sustainable design to promote sustainability and wellness as in integral part of the healing environment. Examples of sustainable design features include natural daylighting; a VAV system to reduce volume of air supply and fan energy; use of locally sourced or produced materials; a new wadi-scape with low water / low maintenance landscape with indigenous plants; low flow water fixtures and appliances; condensate recovery used for non-potable purposes (cooling towers) to reduce fresh water consumption; 75% of the total power requirement for heating hot water is generated by roof mounted solar panels; and a construction waste program. The project was designed according to the requirements of the “Estidama” sustainable design rating system, with a goal of a three or four “Pearl” rating.
“In the UAE, all projects built must meet sustainable programs, and these rules have impacted our approach to design,” say Norman Soto, AIA, Principal / Director of Healthcare in the MENA Region for Burt Hill. “Most of the attention is on energy conservation, with energy saving models being applied to all aspects of the building design, including solar orientation, efficient and long cycle mechanical and electrical systems, use of solar power, and sustainable ecological systems applied to the sites and buildings. Water conservation is a major role player in the Middle East and Al Mafraq is designed to implement all opportunities to recycle waste water."
- HUST Academic Center Recognized by 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania, May 25, 2010
The 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania honored Harrisburg University of Science and Technology and Burt Hill with a 2010 Commonwealth Award for the university’s new, 373,000-square-foot Academic Center. The Silver Award was presented during an awards ceremony held in early May. The awards program recognizes those who contribute to creating a better future for the residents of Pennsylvania, both economically and environmentally.
Harrisburg University is Pennsylvania’s first non-profit independent university focused on science and technology in more than a century. The Academic Center encompasses classrooms, an auditorium, laboratories, student team meeting areas, a library and reading room, a conference center, parking, administrative offices, and a full floor of breakout space. Incorporating “learning communities” into an urban high-rise in the heart of downtown presented an opportunity to create, through architecture, an instant icon that would visually brand the university. Massing decisions, façade articulation, and a distinctive roof profile all serve to establish a true destination point with a strong identity that openly calls out the university’s emerging role in the Harrisburg community.
- Saint Joseph's University Parking Garage Recognized by ACI, May 24, 2010
The Hawks Landing Parking Garage at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA, was awarded the Grand Prize Award in the Precast Concrete Building Systems category by the Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Chapter of the American Concrete Institute. Held in April, the competition recognizes excellence in conception, originality, and applicability of concrete in the built environment. Designed by Burt Hill and fabricated by High Concrete Group LLC, the 135,000-square-foot facility serves as a “gateway” to the school. The design team worked closely with the university to develop a design that appeals to users and relates well to the architectural style of the campus. The first floor and street frontage of the six-story building house a restaurant, coffee shop, and the university bookstore, while the remaining floors provide parking.

The conference on Green Building Information Modeling (BIM): How Environmental Performance is Improving Sustainability will take place on May 19 in Boston. Aimed at design and construction professionals, attendees will learn more about how BIM is helping to deliver more sustainable projects. Jim Summers, an associate at Burt Hill and leader of the firm’s Practice Technology Group, is presenting an education session titled “Modeling Performative Design." The session will address the wide variety of variables to evaluate, analyze and balance with each other when trying to develop the optimal sustainable solution for a project, and how Burt Hill uses innovative modeling technology to identify the “sweet spot” for multiple variables across their possible ranges, yielding a solution tailored to the unique priorities of each owner. Fletcher MacNeill, AIA, LEED AP, a senior healthcare architect, and Jeri Steele, R.N., a clinical research specialist, are moderating a roundtable discussion at the HEALTHCARE DESIGN 2010 conference. “Don't Throw Away That Old Hospital – It Might be Worth Saving,” will address the fact that many hospital systems look at building replacements in the belief that doing so will enable them to improve delivery of service or become more competitive. Fletcher and Jeri will offer an alternative approach of “improving in place” that can achieve similar results at less cost over time. This interdisciplinary approach, which combines lean process analysis of clinical practices with architecture and engineering problem solving, will illuminate planning solutions as well as financial parameters for consideration. Tom Demko, a principal in Burt Hill’s healthcare practice, is presenting at the Tradeline 2010 Conference on Lean Processes for Capital Projects and Facilities Management. Demko’s presentation, "Getting Lean Construction Benefits Under Conventional CM Contracting Models," addresses how to inject lean construction processes into conventional CM projects to garner costs savings, risk-management, and schedule reducing benefits. He chronicles experiences of utilizing Value Stream Mapping, Target Value Design, Last Planner System™, and Continuous Improvement Strategy in conventionally contracted projects. He illustrates key features of these project tools relative to conventional CM contract models, process changes these tools bring about, the impact on project team members, and the forward-looking effect their use has on a future transition to a full-blown IPD project model.

- UPMC Passavant Opens New Pavilion, March 1, 2010
Burt Hill is proud to announce the opening of the new pavilion addition at UPMC Passavant, a hospital within the UPMC Health System. Designed by Burt Hill, the 220,000-square-foot, seven-story facility provides access to an array of advanced treatments for cancer care, cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, and emergency medicine. Inpatient services include an additional 16 cardiovascular ICU beds and 72 medical-surgical beds. Designed to achieve LEED certification, the facility also boasts a roof garden and warm, naturally lit interiors.
"Every aspect of the project was approached with the same philosophy – to do what is best for the patient and what will allow the staff to deliver better care," said Tom Demko, principal-in-charge of the project. "In today’s marketplace, hospital choice is consumer-driven. - Pittsburgh Office Announces New Wins, February 23, 2010
Peter Moriarty, AIA, CEO and President of Burt Hill, announced several new project wins for its Pittsburgh office.
The firm was awarded design services including medical planning, architecture, interiors, engineering and site design for a new $30 million cancer center at The Charleston Area Medical Center. The Charleston Area Medical Center is a five-hospital academic medical center located in West Virginia. The project includes approximately 100,000 square feet of radiation oncology, medical oncology, medical office space, an imaging center, a women’s care center, and other patient amenities.
Burt Hill was also engaged by Gannon University to provide planning, architecture, engineering, and interior design services for the design and construction of a new residence hall. The program calls for a five-story, 94,000-square-foot facility consisting of 264 student beds, with an appropriate variety of room and suite configurations with bathrooms. Additional amenities include gathering and student food service preparation areas, a laundry room, fitness center, main lobby and reception area, and a community lounge.
“Last year was a challenge overall for the design industry,” said Moriarty. "And we’ve weathered the economic uncertainty better than many. As an international firm with 12 offices, we’re cautiously optimistic as we move forward through 2010.”

Similar to his new role at Burt Hill, he was responsible for marketing, business development, and sales in this market segment; as well as maintaining excellent client relationships and delivering successful projects. A sustainable design advocate, George has designed, consulted on, or managed over 2 million square feet of LEED Certified Buildings that represent over $250 million dollars in construction. His capabilities in this area match well with the firm’s leadership in such pursuits.

- Ray to Sit on "Revolutionzing Construction" Panel, January 27, 2010
Robert Ray, Burt Hill's Chief Legal Officer, is a member of the discussion panel for the upcoming "Revolutionizing Construction" event hosted by the Delaware Valley Green Building Council, Mindshift, and Haworth. The panel will address the current state of the construction industry and how it can improve and adapt to global, environmental, and economic challenges. The diverse panel will address several topics, including BIM, lean construction, IPD, and many of the laws related to construction and contracts.
The event takes place on February 16 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Haworth Showroom at the Curtis Center, 601 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- Final Design for Gardner Museum Expansion Revealed, January 26, 2010
The final plans for the new wing at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum were released on January 21, 2010. Designed by Renzo Piano and the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, in collaboration with Burt Hill, the 70,000-square-foot extension is expected to open in early 2012.
The new wing will house a 296-seat performance hall, a 2,000-square-foot special exhibition gallery, expanded gardens and greenhouses, education studios and classrooms, accommodations for Artists-in-Residence, conservation labs, a new visitor entrance, and an expanded museum shop and café.
An open and transparent design takes advantage of natural daylighting via a glass first floor to fully engage visitors in the museum experience. In addition to viewing the art collections, visitors can stroll through the greenhouses or observe a workshop taking place in one of the studios. While the reorganization of the interior space will serve the museum’s expanding needs well into the future, the design honors its legacy by preserving its heritage.
The building is aiming for a LEED certification, with sustainable design strategies that include a geothermal well system, daylight harvesting, and the utilization of local materials.
