- MEP Middle East Award, December 5, 2008
Burt Hill was recognized by MEP Middle East Magazine, receiving the award for "Medium-Sized Project of the Year for 2008" for our design of the GEMS Boat House School. The award winners were announced at a gala dinner in Dubai on December 4th. The design of the K-6 school, located on the Palm Jumeirah Crescent, meets LEED standards and incorporates many energy savings features, including demand control ventilation, solar water heaters, and condensate recovery. The classroom environment is controlled with photo/light sensors, occupancy sensors, and CO2 sensors in order to provide a better learning environment for students.
- Pennsylvania Parking Association Award of Excellence, December 3, 2008
The new parking garage and retail facility at Saint Joseph's University has been recognized with an Award of Excellence by the Pennsylvania Parking Association (PPA). The project received the award in the New Design Less than 450 Spaces division. The parking structure was designed to echo the Gothic elements prevalent on other campus buildings. The first floor of the six-story facility houses a restaurant, coffee shop, and the university bookstore, while the parking floors provide 442 spaces.

During Design Pittsburgh 2008, a signature program of the AIA Pittsburgh, the Northern Kentucky University Center for Informatics was awarded an Award of Excellence in the Open Plan category. The program is designed to showcase, celebrate, and honor architects and designers for their accomplishments. Burt Hill designed the project as part of a competition sponsored by the university. The jury cited the design as showing “a lot of ambition.”

Six Burt Hill leaders have been promoted to the role of Principal. The promotions of Dr. Nabil Al Saudi, Jayesh Hariyani, Rick Karcher, John Kim, Ivar Krasinski, and Bob Ray were implemented to support the continued growth of several international and domestic Burt Hill offices.
Promotions were granted based on the employees' ability to create and sustain an environment that translates Burt Hill's vision and values into daily operations. The ability to build partnerships by cultivating client relationships and alliances across internal and external boundaries was another consideration for promotion. In addition, employees were evaluated on their ability to engage staff and establish a shared vision of future outcomes and goals.

Dr. Nabil Al Saudi has many years of international experience in structural engineering as a professor and scientific researcher in universities. He is a highly trained engineer who has established a diverse, modern structural engineering division with strong skills capable to conduct optimum designs for a variety of projects including specialized high-rise hotels, office buildings, and residential facilities.
Jayesh Hariyani, founder and director of our India office, has established himself as an entrepreneur as well as an architect. In addition to his experience in residential development and the science and technology market sectors, he also has a history as a leader in research efforts at Burt Hill. Jayesh is currently leading our efforts in Ahmedabad, India, to establish a strong, new office.
Rick Karcher has been responsible for the planning and design of more than $1 billion worth of K-12 projects during his career. With 30 years of experience, he excels in creating solutions for his clients that reflect his sensitivity for aesthetics, budgets, efficiency, and durability. He is the studio manager for our K-12 practice, coordinating resources and talents to meet the needs of the projects and to help individuals develop their skills.
John Kim manages the resort and hospitality, retail, and residential studios. - Burt Hill Adds Two Senior Healthcare Designers, July 8, 2008
Burt Hill has added two new senior level employees to its Philadelphia office. Fletcher MacNeill, AIA, and Paige Macfarlan, NCIDQ Certified, have been hired to the healthcare design team as senior architect and senior interior designer, respectively. Both MacNeill and Macfarlan have comprehensive backgrounds in healthcare planning and design.
MacNeill is a senior architect with over 20 years of experience in healthcare design and was previously a principal at Ewing Cole. His responsibilities at Burt Hill include architectural leadership, staff development, and healthcare business development.
Macfarlan was most recently a senior interior designer with Granary Associates where she worked on projects for Duke University Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and Children's Specialized Hospital, among others. In addition to providing leadership within Burt Hill's interior design department, her responsibilities encompass all phases of a design project from programming to construction administration.

Autodesk, Inc. is the world leader in 2D and 3D design software for the manufacturing, building and construction, media, and entertainment markets. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) have selected Boston's Macallen Building Condominiums as one of ten projects that exemplify sustainable architecture and green design solutions that protect and enhance the environment. Pappas Properties commissioned Burt Hill as architect of record and Office dA as design architect for the design of the 11-story building that features 140 condominium units ranging from studio to three-bedroom layouts. The Macallen Building is the first LEED Gold rated residential building in Boston and will be honored at the AIA 2008 National Convention and Design Exposition.
The Macallen Building utilizes green design as a way of marketing a lifestyle and concern for the environment. The South Boston building features innovative sustainable design strategies that will save over 600,000 gallons of water annually while consuming 30% less electricity than a conventional building. "Receiving the COTE Award for this project is a tremendous honor. The design team worked tirelessly to ensure that this building be not only sustainable and innovative, but also an asset to the Boston community," said Steve Brittan, Director of Burt Hill's Boston office.
In addition to the building's green design initiatives, the Macallen Building is playing an important role in South Boston's urban revitalization. - Burt Hill Awarded Two Student Center Projects, April 14, 2008
Burt Hill continues to build on its impressive student center portfolio with two new wins. Both Armstrong Atlantic State University and Carthage College have appointed Burt Hill to design premium student centers on campus.
Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) of Savannah, Ga., commissioned Burt Hill and The Architecture Group of Atlanta to complete renovations and an addition to an existing union, the Memorial College Center (MCC). The new student center is expected to be a single structure that expands from the MCC and includes a bookstore, cafeteria, student quadrangle, and central energy plant. The project will also include extensive renovations and early planning for a future library addition.
Carthage College of Kenosha, Wis., also selected Burt Hill to convert an existing building on its campus into a new student center. The 13,200-square-foot Seidemann Building was constructed in 1973 and originally used as an aquatic center. Burt Hill will design renovations and additions to convert the building into a flexible, welcoming center that will serve as the major campus destination and meeting place for students.
"Burt Hill is attracted to student centers because of their potential to extend the learning environment beyond the classroom," Principal David Hatton said. Corning Incorporated recently commissioned Burt Hill to design the renovation and expansion of its Sullivan Park Research and Development campus near Corning, NY. The goal of this project is to expand Corning’s research and development capabilities and to provide modern, flexible laboratory space conducive to the development of innovative technologies. All phases of this project are expected to be completed by 2013.
The expansion plan at Corning's world-leading research center includes significant renovation of an existing research and development building and construction of a new facility. Results are expected to include increased operational efficiency, flexibility, space utilization and energy efficiency.

Pappas Properties commissioned Office dA as design architect and Burt Hill as architect of record for the design of the 11-story, tiered structure, which features 140 condominium units ranging from studio to three-bedroom layouts, with duplex and triplex options. The Macallen Building incorporates the principles of sustainable design and will be the first LEED Gold rated residential building in Boston.
Burt Hill's sustainable design strategies included the extensive use of recycled and rapidly renewable materials in construction as well as the recycling of 75% of the construction debris, diverting it from landfills. "We are very excited to receive the AIA Housing Award for this project. This award is a testament to the creativity and passion of our integrated engineering and architecture teams. The Macallen Building is an integral part of urban revitalization in South Boston. It occupies a transitional site between the highway off-ramps, an old residential fabric, and an industrial zone. It sits on a three-story parking structure that accommodates 290 cars. The building offers an exercise facility, film room, swimming pool, a hybrid community car, quick access to public transportation, bike paths, recreational facilities, and ground floor retail vendors.
